Easy DIY Hummingbird Feeder

We’ve put together a few ideas we found on Pinterest to create an easy to follow tutorial on how to make your very own hummingbird feeder.  All you need is a small mason jar, a piece of red plastic and twine!  So easy and yet, with beautiful results!  We will include a recipe for hummingbird food and few of our favorite picture books in case you want to turn this project into a unit study with your children.  Enjoy!

SUPPLIES

Small Mason Jar

Thin Red Plastic (dig through your recycling bin, we used an old red folder)

Hole Punch

Twine or a Macrame hanger

Hummingbird Food 

Trace the lid shape on to your thin, red, plastic material and then cut out.

Use your hole punch to make several holes in the plastic circle. 

Try to space the holes apart so that several hummingbirds can drink at once.  

Assemble the jar lid and make sure everything fits.

Now place the jar in a macramé hanger or make one out of twine. 

We wrapped the jar in twine and then knotted more twine to make the loop for hanging.

Voila!  Isn’t she pretty?  So easy too!

Here is our easy homemade hummingbird food recipe:

1 cup of sugar

4 cups of water

Bring water to a boil, then turn off heat and add sugar. 

Stir until it dissolves completely and allow to cool.

Do not add red food coloring as this is unhealthy for the birds.

Unused portion can be stored in the fridge for a week. 

Be sure to wash your hummingbird feeder and rinse well a few times per week in the warmer weather.
