A Closer Look at Pigs

This week with “The Playful Pioneers” curriculum we studied PIGS…swine, sows and hogs. We first sketched a picture of a pig and labelled all her parts with the help of “Farm Anatomy” by Julia Rothman.  Of course, the girls had a good chuckle about the word “rump”.

 

 

 

We mixed whip cream and cocoa to make a nice muddy mess for our pigs to play in.  The girls would get the pigs completely covered and then run to wash them off and repeat the process over and over.  I think they enjoyed getting to lick their fingers as well!

 

 

We decided to add in an activity to go with one of our storybook reads.  “The Three Little Pigs” left the girls just begging to try to build each style of home.  A pile of hay from our bunny’s stash, a stack of twigs from the yard and a handful of lego bricks is all this activity required. 

We added in our little wolf and some pom-pom piggies to renact the whole scene.  Quickly the girls realized the lego was superior and they scurried off to make better homes for all three pigs…and a jail for the wolf!

 

 

BOOKS

 

“Pigs” by Gail Gibbons is a non-fiction book filled with facts about the smartest of all farm animals, lots of detail and pictures throughout. 

 

 

“The Three Pigs” by David Wiesner is a fiction book which begins at a familiar pace but quickly spirals into a new adventure filled with sly humor and dazzling pictures, earning this book a Caldecott Medal. 

 

“Pigs (Munsch for Kids)” by Michael Martchenko is a fun fiction book for all you Munch lovers out there.  Entertaining for parents as well as children.

 

 

CRAFTS

“Muddy Pigs” by Rust and Sunshine is an easy and messy craft for all ages!

“Pig painted rocks” by Styleroom is such a cute activity to use up all those rocks gathered over the warmer months.

“Pig Tail Color Sort” by Modern Preschool is a fun sensory bin style activity.
